藻红蛋白具有光敏作用，是海洋藻类中重要的捕光色素蛋白之一，也是新型的高效光敏剂。经适宜波长的光激发后可以产生单线态氧及其它的氧自由基，杀伤生物大分子。肿瘤光动力治疗是以此为基础而发展起来的很有前景的肿瘤治疗新手段.尽管新型的光敏药物在不断的涌现，包括：铝酞菁、C60等，但目前常用的光敏药物主要来自全血中分离的血叶琳衍生物，它们不仅价格昂贵，而且毒副作用大，有严重的皮肤光毒反应.接受以血叶琳衍生物作光敏剂的光动力治疗的病人至少要避光两周到一个月，以防止皮肤受到光毒性的破坏。因而，限制了肿瘤光动力治疗的广泛应用.其它的光敏药物，目前尚处在探讨阶段。有研究表明藻红蛋白是一种新型的高效、无毒副作用的光敏药物，可望开发为有实用价值的新型光动力药物。我们动态观察了藻红蛋白与肿瘤细胞的相互结合过程，为藻红蛋藻红蛋白与细胞结合主要发生在三个结构层次，即细胞膜，胞浆和胞核。PE首先与细胞膜结合，形成明显的环状荧光；随着与细胞作用时间的延长，逐渐进入细胞浆及核内.有时甚至可以观察到核内清晰的核仁。已有资料证明，PE在经过激光激发后可以产生单线态氧及其它的氧自由基产物。这些活性氧组份具有破坏包括蛋白质和核酸等在内的生物大分子的作用。藻红蛋白的激光光敏杀伤肿瘤细胞可能在细胞水平的三个层次上发挥作用：

1)藻红蛋白结合于肿瘤细胞膜或游离于膜外，光敏反应发生时，产物可攻击膜蛋白和不饱和脂质，引起膜蛋白光氧化，损伤膜结构；

2)位于胞浆内，光辐照产生的单线态氧等自由基对胞浆内酶和核酸进行攻击，影响细胞内生化反应，破坏RNA的结构.作用于线粒体，破坏生物氧化链等；

3)作用于细胞核内的DNA，阻碍细胞周期的进行，启动细胞凋亡。
